No pain, no gain
POINT has been thriving for 30 years, also thanks to natural resources. We wanted to give a little bit back to the landscape we work in. Read how we planted service-berry in Medlov.
Action “trees”
On Wednesday, 1 November 2023, the representatives of the Medlov township, Mr. Roman Zabil, the mayor and Mrs. Hana Novotná, the vice-mayor, met with the owners and employees of the POINT CZ printing company and together they planted the tree shrub of Lamark service-berry. They have thus completed the last phase of the project: Restoration of greenery in the village of Medlov, which was financed by the printing company. The project was created as part of the celebration of the year 2023, when POINT CZ celebrates its 30th anniversary, and the township of Medlov, where the printing company has its printing premises, celebrates 850 years of its establishment.
"As part of our celebrations this year, we wanted to do something that would also have an environmental impact. To do something for nature, for the community in which we produce and for a good feeling.” Said Michal Sázavský, the owner of POINT CZ.
So how did it go?
The work started in the winter. We got in touch with the village of Medlov and chose a site that would be the most suitable for renovation. We approached a gardening company and chose a design from Fajn Zahrada. We liked that it preferred plants that are sustainable in the area, fit the character of the village and chose also trees with edible fruits. Landscaping and substrate preparation took place over the summer and planting took place in the autumn.
“Autumn is ideal for this planting, the plants have a chance to root and establish themselves over the winter. Today you can see mostly dirt, but look forward to spring, when the whole place will turn green and come into blossom.” Added Magda Lengálová from Fajn Zahrada.
When the village and the company work together
It is defacto a joint project of POINT CZ and Medlov towhship. The village contributed to the landscaping, supplying soil and mulch. Planting is just the beginning. It will be followed by plant care, watering and fertilising.
“We are glad that the mutual cooperation is working well and that the companies that have production plants here care about what is happening in the village. We believe that we will be able to implement other nice projects in the future.”Said the mayor of Medlov, Roman Zabil.
Planting ceremony 1/11
Three ones in the date, three service-berries and thirty years of printing company? No, we are not superstitious, it just worked out so beautifully, including the weather. The ceremony of planting the service-berries was a nice meeting of the representatives of the village and colleagues from the printing production plants from Medlov, Brno and Jedovnice. We planted the shrubs and watered them with good “Moravian”. We wish the plants to thrive and look forward to making everyone who passes by happy when they come into blossom.
“We are proud that the main raw material on which the entire production of POINT CZ is based is ecological paper. We realise that it is because of trees that we have had jobs for 30 years. We are more than motivated to help nature and the region we live in. We therefore try to be as active as possible in ecology and recycling. We use alternative energy resources in production, reduce our carbon footprint with state of the art technology, recover heat, work with water-based paints and sort waste into 15 groups. We also have a little flock of sheep working with us on site and we are planning to create a biotope.” Vladimír Sázavský, the owner of the printing company, said at the planting ceremony.
So what is going to grow there?
In total, we renovated an area of about 300 m2, which was planted with alpines and perennials. They are complemented by beds with plants and shrubs that bloom all year round: roses, lavender, silverweed, weigela, Russian sage, carryopteris, spiraea, but also daffodils and tulips. Three Lamark service-berries are the dominant feature. This tree shrub grows 3–5 metres tall, has delicate white flowers and edible fruits. It has been cultivated in Europe since the 17th century and is called the Indian bilberry.
